This year’s LAAF is bigger than ever. From Thursday Dec 5 till Sunday Dec 9. Join us in celebrating the best in animation on the big screen, network and socialize with your fellow animation enthusiasts. It promises to be the best LAAF yet! Here’s breakdown of what we have in store (more details to follow):
- Thurs. Dec. 5 – ANIMATION MEETUP at the BIGFOOT LODGE (Atwater Village). Join animation students, professionals and industry insiders for a pre-festival social meetup.
- Fri. Dec 6 – OPENING NIGHT “Cartoon-athon!” – see a smorgasbord of classic and super rare animation, all projected on FILM on the BIG SCREEN! Enjoy classic Warner Bros., Tex Avery, Popeye, Betty Boop, Tom & Jerry, Tim Burton, retro animated commercials, promos, excerpts from the classic WATERSHIP DOWN plus adult animation from UK’s Bob Godfrey and so much more! Meet the festival hosts, founders and your fellow animators. With an old-school intermission, live magic and a FREE raffle! Limited seating. Book early.
- Sat Dec. 7 – Screening WORK IN COMPETITION all day, and featuring an evening event dedicated toSaturday features screenings of films in competition throughout the day. Saturday’s evening program is a generously full-length screening of newly restored Fleischer Studio Shorts including Betty Boop, Koko the Clown, Superman and Popeye shorts, a treasure trove of fantastic 4K restorations with interstitial commentary from an illustrious panel of animation directors, including Jorge Guttieriez (Maya and the Three, Book of Life), Dave Wasson (CupHead and Mickey shorts) and Howard Baker (Pharrell William’s Brick by Brick) and historian Ray Pointer, author of The Art and Inventions of Max Fleischer. Also on hand will be Mauricio Alvarado who has worked with Paramount and the Fleischer family to bring about these recent restorations. There will also be an array of Fleischer souvenir memorabilia available for purchase
- Sun Dec. 8 – Screening WORK IN COMPETITION. Sunday evening is the Awards Gala and after party event in which awards will be given in many student and professional categories, judged by a large panel of animation and film professionals. Music will be provided by LAAF’s own house band. The Eastwood Performing Art Center at the corner of Oxford and Santa Monica Blvd in Hollywood.
